Come Out And Play, This Is Your Land, Floridians! Ecosystems at Work!

Did you know that the South Florida Water Management manages public lands from the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes in the Northern Everglades to Florida Bay in the Southern Everglades? The water district is in charge of protecting and taking care of our water resources by balancing and improving water quality and flood control.

The water district is also in charge of ecosystem restoration projects that preserve our water and our land and this is all land that is owned by us, the public and ours to enjoy. They have partnered with U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Division Of Forestry, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies, Local Governments, Florida Trail Association, Audubon Society, The Nature Conservancy and more to keep up the lands and the projects for protection of our delicate eco-systems and enjoyment.

The Everglades Restoration project is expanding and creating more resource projects and you are welcome to become involved.

Come out and play on public lands. You can hike, fish, camp, hunt, study nature, ride horses, bird watch, bicycle or just sit back and feel the peace and be one with nature. The water district is going to implement year round landscape restrictions to save water here in Florida. I suggest as always, to begin to take one part of your yard at a time and install zeroscape landscaping with native plants and foliage to help save water. If you would like to participate in a survey regarding restricting water usage you can go to www.sfwmd.gov.  Water conservation is very important to our state and even though we have had lots of rain and Lake Okeechobee has stabilized we still need to conserve. Right near us, visit Stormwater Treatment Area ¾- Harold A Campbell Public Use Area. There are over 16,722 acres of constructed wetlands. This is just one example of what our area offers. We are working hard in this area to get rid of the toxic waste runoff from agriculture before it gets to the Everglades. You can ride your bike on over 2 miles of trails. If you like to fish there is great fishing for largemouth bass and others in the wide canals. You can canoe for several miles on the canal or you just take in bird watching. There are lots of Osprey and Hawks. Certain times during the year there are duck hunts here.

This is just one example of the many Conservation areas that you can enjoy! So start visiting these wonderful areas and help save our Everglades.
