Saying GoodBye Is A Hard Thing To Do* Memories Will Stay Forever*

Tonight we said good bye to our loving and beautiful family member, our Siamese Cat, Cleo. If you are interested in finding out how we got to this point please read, A Hit and Run in Wellington That Makes No Sense.

We spent this last day with Cleo and then brought him to the Animal Hospital in Wellington Florida on Greenview Shores in the old Winn Dixie Plaza next to our Chiropractor's office, Dr. Dressner.  My daughter, my little one and I went to the hospital with him.

cleo siamese

After some time in the examination room we discovered the following:

The car had just nipped him near his tail and had not done any damage. All of his bones were strong and intact. His spine was fine. The paralysis was caused by a stroke. He had a bad heart,  one of his kidneys was no longer working right, his liver was shrinking and he also has swallowed a dime at some point in his life and it was in his stomach releasing toxins. The clot traveled down to his legs and caused them to become paralyzed. He had no feelings in his legs, he could not posture to go to the bathroom and he was upset because he could no longer walk. The prognosis was a less than 15% chance of recovery. He was not a patient for surgery due to his heart condition. So after informing all of my kids about the prognosis; my daughter, Nestor and I decided it was best to help put him to rest. The doctor also believed this was the best thing to do.

It was a very sad moment, lots of tears, but a farewell was the humane and decent action to take. He has been in our family for 13 years and in a cat's life that is like 75 years old. He had a great life with us. When he was two years old  I began breeding his Siamese line. He was a great stud. We have many of his offspring around the country in good homes. We stopped breeding him about 7 years ago. The biggest memory is one of fun and lots of talking. He talked about everything as is usual with Siamese cats.

When I was explaining to our 5 year old son what was going on I asked him if he understood that we were not going to be seeing Cleo again he stated with surety," He is going to Heavenly Father and then coming back to us as an Angel." The faith of a child! God Bless our Cleo and looking at the glass half full we are appreciating the memories and treasure the time we had together with him. He richly blessed our lives for many years.

Oh Katerina, I'm so sorry to here about Cleo.  You have brought up such a wise little boy.  Sometimes it's so amazing what comes out of the mouths of our babes.  I hope you are OK.  I'm thinking of you tonight.

Katerina - I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  It sounds like you did the right thing here.  My wife and I have a cat that is about 14 years old now, along with two other younger cats.  We actually got the kittens when it looked like our cat was getting old and sick, then the competition seemed to perk her up.  That was about three years ago.  I have been in a pretty sentimental mood myself.  Thanks for sharing your stories with us.

Katerina -  How sad that you had to say goodbye to your dear furry friend, Cleo.
From your post, I know he was well loved and will be missed.
My thoughts are with you and your family.

I remember when I had to put down my Ashley Cat.

Katerina, I am so sorry for your loss!  I have a dog who is my baby so I understand completely.  Our pets are such a big part of our lives.  How sweet of your son to understand in such a special way.  I'm sure your life was touched by Cleo in a way that you and your family will always cherish.

Very beautiful tribute to Cleo.......it is hard when our pets have been with us so long and we have to make these difficult decisions........but as you know it was the right thing to do.  Thank you for sharing this.

Katrina - I'm so sorry for your and your little ones. How hard it is for us to let go. Our dog is 13 and still acts like a pup in some ways, but we can see signs that she's getting older. I told God to just take her when it's her time because I don't think I could take her to the vet to let her go. They become so much like family.

KATERINA:  I'm so sorry to hear about Cleo.  You've got a very smart little boy there.  I've often wondered how my children will handle things in the future, as our dog is now 11 years old.  It sounds like you have some great memories to cherish.

Katerina, having been in a similar situation last year, I am so sorry to hear about Cleo.  Just always remember the great times with him. Those memories will last forever.  I had my boxer cremated and he is with us always.  He's got a cedar box with his first picture at 5 weeks old on it.  Cherish the memories.

Katerina, I'm so sorry for you. What more is there to say? Maybe you can get one of his grandchildren. I'm sure one of his kittens has had kittens of her own by now. A new kitten will soften the blow a little bit and make the grieving a little easier.

Take care of your family.

Very uplifting story despite the obvious sadness at losing a family member. Today is in fact the second anniversary of my father-in-law passing. I had not really known him for long, but he and I became very close very quickly and I miss my friend. Somehow I feel I was meant to read this today. Thank you.

Katerina-My heart aches for you and your family. I'm so sorry for your loss.  Pets are such a big part of our lives.  As I was reading and trying to catch the many tears that were falling, I was taken back to a very similar situation a couple months ago with our family.  We had rescued "Bluey" (also a siamese w/beautiful blue eyes) 11 years ago.  He was a spunky cat.  From no where he became very sick. Wouldn't eat or drink, nothing.  My son and I took him into the vet on a Sunday morning and they tested him.  He had a liver disease in which the vet gave him a 20% chance of making it through.  We had to make a very difficult choice that day.  It was so hard. I didn't think it was fair to have to make this decision.  I just prayed and knew in my heart what needed to be done.  For days after he passed it was amazing to me. I was certain that he was tucked in his same spot,on the edge of our bed, I could see him clearly. It happened quite a few times in different areas in our house.  So when your little boy says Cleo is "coming back as an Angel", he's right.  What a bright little boy he his.

Nestor and Katerina, I am so sorry for your loss.  I've been down that road many times and its never easy.  My first kitty also had a clot that caused rear end paralysis.  My vet thought giving heprin a try might be worth it, although chances were slim it would work.  She had a heprin injection everyday for 7 days and by the 4th day was up and walking.  He was surprised it worked as well as it did.  She had six good weeks left before her kidney disease got hold of her, but I'll always be grateful we went for the slim chance. Ya just never know.

Katerina and Nestor and family,  I am so sorry at the loss of your beautiful family member.  I'm sure the lovely memories you have with Cleo will help some during this time of sadness.  It is a terribly difficult decision but I know you did the right thing, I have never wanted my dogs to suffer, either.  Blessings to you all....

Nestor and Kat:  These are always trying times!  My parents had to put down our little dog of 17 years last month.  We knew she wasn't doing too well but it was still a shock when we were finally forced to make the right decision.  Your blog was a very nice tribute!  :)

I just read this post and wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss.  Pets bring us so much joy and I have cried Jakelike a baby when I lost my best friend a few years ago.

I swore wouldn't get another dog because I get so attached.  Then my wife convinced me to just stop by a pet store to take a look.  When we walked out of the store we bought a newspaper to look for a new best friend.  By the end of the day we adopted Jake.

I hope he is with us for a long time.

May you find comfort in the joys you shared with Cleo.

Linda- Thank you so much for your condolences and kind words. Thank you for caring enough to write a comment. Is Tater a cat? This week as we eat we see Cleo sitting at our feet looking up at us for food, and my daughter saw him laying on the top of the sofa like he likes to do. Maybe Tristan knew more than we did with his comment that Cleo is coming back as an angel. Katerina
