The Winter Equestrian Festival held in Wellington Florida opens this week. The Festival is the world's oldest and longest running equestrian competition. Get ready for some awesome fun and spectacular competitions this year in the newly renovated Equestrian Showgrounds and it all starts tomorrow, Wednesday January 16, 2008. The show is in it's 29th year here in Wellington Florida!
Mark Bellissimo and his partners with their company called Wellington Sport Productions are going to turn the Winter Equestrian Festival into a first class act this year. Mark Bellissimo bought the Winter Equestrian Show licenses from Jean Mische this past November ending a long argument and fighting for over a year. The Winter Equestrian Festival will now be 2 weeks longer with more events.
There is a lot of pressure on Wellington this year because the Olympic trials are held at the Winter Equestrian Festival this year. Everyone knows this year is very important.
Changes have been made and continue to be made to the show grounds. All the grass in the International Arena has been torn out and replaced with a sand and fiber mixture which is better on the horse's legs and hooves. About 2,000 seats are being added for reserved seating which replaces the bleachers. They even had added directory maps so that spectators can find their way around. Most of the changes were as a result of a survey of equestrians in our community about what they would like to see.
One of the new night time events is going to be a six bar competition. This is like the opposite of limbo. In this event the riders jump over a series of jumps and the bars keep getting higher until only one rider is left.
There are 2,800 stalls at the showgrounds and 2,600 of them have already been filled! That is a good thing!

Oh how I long to be there! Especially this year with the riders trying to qualify for the Olympics. It's great that the grounds have been improved. Keep us posted! I'd love to hear how the Grand Prix riders do.
