Linking strategies is one area where I see that many people do not fully utilize. I know I didn't. I get so excited about getting my thoughts down on a post and then I forget to add internal links. This post is about internal linking strategies.
SEO is very complex and much of it is very time consuming to control by yourself but there is one area besides using your keywords correctly where you easily work on yourself and that is internal linking strategies.
To begin with please read the following posts to get to this point:
Longtail Keywords For Blogging-Fishing With The Right Bait On Your Active Rain Blog
Update on Longtail Keywords For Blogging.
Blogging For Business; Keyword Rich Content to Get Your Phone To Ring.
Most of us do not fully utilize and optimize our blogs with internal linking strategies. Here are some ways in which you can more fully use internal linking in your blog posts.
In case you do not know how to add a link to your post, it is very easy to do:
Highlight the text you want to turn into a link.
Click on the link picture on your Active Rain toolbar.
A link box will pop up.
Add the URL of the place you want that link to go to. Add your title keywords. Click Insert. It is that easy.
Use Anchor text for all your links. This is one of the most important and easy SEO things you can do with your blog and website. Your anchor text should be keyword rich. Use the keywords you want to be found for in your anchor text.
What is anchor text? When you type in your post, 'Click here to search all Wellington Florida Luxury Homes For Sale' that is anchor text. Now I would click on the link image on the toolbar and add my URL into the link box, 'http://www.Wellington-luxury-homes.com. Then when someone clicks on the text that I wrote it will go to my website. When you add the link, the anchor text will be in blue font color. That tells people that if they click on the words they will be going to where you linked those words to go to.
Do not use the name of your website and write your whole web address in your post because then you are not fully optimizing using your keywords. I see a lot of posts where the whole address is right in the post and the URL is not keyword rich. Like for instance: http://www.anyrealtyinnowheretown.com. Those words should go in your link box but not in the post itself. Use keywords in the text part.
Also when you are using links internally make sure you do not use shortcuts to certain pages within your site. Type out the entire URL within your page you want your visitor to go to. If you are sending them to another post use the URL of that post, don't send them to just your profile page unless that is where you want them to go.
For each post concentrate on only a few longtail keywords per post. Don't try to go and rank for every keyword in one post. Target those specific keywords and learn how to use them effectively throughout your posts.
When you are using internal linking add it throughout the body of your post rather than just listing all the links in a row. So in each paragraph add words that are a part of what you are writing about and turn those words into links. Linking within your page adds more relevance and internal value to your link.
Be careful to not have too many outgoing links outside of your site. It is recommended that on each page of your website to not have more than 10 outbound links so that means with your blog post you should certainly not even close to that many outbound links. I would not want more than 2 or 3 outbound links.
You can go back to some of your older posts and add internal links to some of your newer pages of relevance. This way you add some valuable link juice and give it some rank boost.

Oh my gosh Katerina you have no idea the extra, extra step I was doing to add links. I had no idea this is how it should be done. Thank YOU so much for saving me a whole heck of a lot of time when posting my blogs.
So, I'm curious-how are you getting the copy of your window to add as a picture to your blog post and how do you get the torn around the edges effect?
Katerina, I just keep trying to figure out what my longtail words would be.......this is such a helplful post, and you did, as usual, a stellar job of explaining.
Katarina: I agree--you really do need to link on your blogs and this is well-deserved little gold star for you!!

Katerina: I have a question about the statement that follows:
"You can go back to some of your older posts and add internal links to some of your newer pages of relevance. This way you add some valuable link juice and give it some rank boost. "
If you go back and add links and then I assume you must repost the post, is that considered bad form to resurrect an old post? I don't want to do anything that is considerate bad form on AR but after reading your post I definitely have posts that could use some links. Thanks for the great blog.
Great post with a lot of good advice. I'll be sure to add links and keywords to more of my posts.

You did it right, with the linking. That is a good start. You want to link to different posts that you have written that are relevant to the post you are linking in. What you did is put a link to your profile and your site. Try to get more links in your own posts linking to your own posts. Need to work on your longtail.

Todd- Keep on doing what you are doing and add a few more tools to your google war chest and you will dominate and stay there. Make sure to do a lot of longtail keyword blogging, which I think you do from reading your blog. Make sure you dominate for each neighborhood in Beaverton. My brother is an attorney in Beaverton and his wife, well sad to say, soon to be xwife after over 20 years of marriage- is a Realtor in Beaverton. Make it a great week. Katerina

Elaine- Those twinkling stars on my blog give me the motivation to write better and better content for all of my subscribers!
Sherry Spengel | Wheaton IL
Sherry- No, that is not internal linking. Internal linking is within the same site or blog. You linking out too much from one site to another is NOT a good thing and will not help your ranking. The links coming into your site or blog from other places, yours or others, IS a good thing. Stay tuned! Katerina
Josh- Stop fighting to get on top. When you 'fight' you will keep on 'fighting'. You are focused on the struggle. Make sure you go with the flow, write good content with strong longtail. Sally- You do such a great job with internal links in your posts. You are one of the best that I have seen in linking. I am always amazed how you can tie your posts together and that my dear, google spiders love! I am sorry it took so long to return your comment. It has been a challenge to even remember where I left off at 182 comments on this post. I guess most every one liked it.
Katerina - I am studying some of your old posts to learn SEO, this remark I made is still in question for me, I don't know what image tags are or where they are. Help?
Thanks for the wonderful tips - what is "keywords in image tags" ??
Hi everybody, I mostly deal with Pasadena Real Estate and Los Angeles real estate, and i have been trying to get my real estate website to rank higher and after reading this post it has made me realize that I was not using the anchor text propertly , I think this is definetly going to help my los angeles real estate website rank higher and faster. I mostly work in pasadena real estate and all of the los Angeles real estate suburbs.
Thanks a million guys!

This is so valuable to someone who knows next to nothing about SEO, thanks for the helpful information that you provide.
David- Yes, this is why I write these tutorials. I took me months to study all of this and apply it all. The one thing that was frustrating is it was always so hard to understand. I said that I would make it simple to understand.
THis is very useful inforation. Thanks for sharing
Larry- Thank you for reading!
Your tutorial is invaluable. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to finding more of your posts!
I'm in Hawaii with an ocean/resort community and luxury home pricing. If you ever feel the inclination to start a network of tips for peers in such communities, make sure you send me an email or invite!
Katerina: If I link from my AR blog to my web site, is that considered an outgoing link? Is linking from my AR blog to my web site bad or good and for which? I'm a little confused. Sorry. I have been linking to different pages of my web site within the body of my blog. I think that is a good thing, but not if it is an outgoing link, no?
Ronda- That is a very interesting idea. I have in fact thought about having a luxury connection for Florida and Hawaii. I lived in Hawaii for 5 years in the last half of the 70's. First I lived in Waikiki, then Kailua, then Aiea, ( spelled it wrong) and last Kaneohe. I do write a lot about the luxury market and how to get luxury lisitings and such. Check out my tags on blogging for business and active rain community support to help you with your blogging. Consider subscribing to my blog if you have not yet done so.
Michelle- That is reciprocal linking and because you own both, your AR blog and your website this is fine. In fact your AR blog will help your google position with your website. But try to do interlinking in your AR blog from other posts on your AR blog. In your website you want to link within your site from other pages within your site. What you want is to do lots of interlinking within that one place and then attract others with higher pagerank to link to you.
Thank you Katerina. The fog is slowly lifting.
Michelle- Good, keep working at it, you will get it.
Thank you for sharing this info, I need to do a lot of work in this area.
Very informative post. In general, for me, the most effective use of anchor text is when you can use it naturally in your text, so it blends in with whatever the post is about.
Thanks for the info here Katerina. I noticed how you link each of your posts to other posts within your blog.
Some really great tips...thanks!
Thanks for all of the helpful information. I just posted a blog on investment properties in Northeast Ohio. I'll let you know how it turns out!
Thanks Katerina: I have a question - when you say don't have more that 10 outgoing links from your site - do you mean the home page. I always heard that the more sites that you have linking back to you is the best - usually higher ranking sites as well. I do reciprocal linking and I have more than 10 on my hopepage - along with internal links in my homepage content. From what you say - is this not a good idea. Should some of these links be on interior pages?
UPDATE!! I left a comment a few hours ago after I posted my blog using your helpful ideas and practices; the blog was titled Buy Investment Property for CASHFLOW in Northeast Ohio - It's Time to Make $$$. I was so thrilled with the results that I have to post a screen shot of the Google search results. Keep in mind, this was 52 minutes after I posted the blog!!
#1 ON GOOGLE IN LESS THAN AN HOUR!!
THANKS SO MUCH!
Very useful info. We have implemented linking strategies more and more.
I learned a lot in my market . The competition is not as bad as most of you deal with. But i will keep pushing to the top. Thanks for sharing. Any one want to critique my web site www.sellmuskegon.com
I have very little experience with creating a blog. I keep reading and rewriting, I don't want my content to be construed as irrelevant or frivolous. I have coached myself to place links while writing, it seems to work best for me. However, since I have yet to post a finished product, it doesn't matter that I've figured out the link! Thanks for blogs worth reading.
Very well worth reading! There are lots of tangents to launch from in this post. It will keep this newbie busy for a while! Thank you for the quality effort to contribute to AR.
Found your blog and read all 5 sections..use the link idea and edited my first 3 blogs..can't wait to see what happens...great stuff.
Hello Katerina, I just found this blog of yours from almost an year ago. I look forward to learn gain some more SEO knowledge at your webinar!
Eileen- I got your webinar reservation! Thanks! You will learn alot! I look forward to teaching this subject because you can see results so fast. You have a competative market so we will work on that too.
Thanks for explaining anchor text in such great detail and giving examples of how to incorporate it. I read a post recently and left me searching google to find out how to use anchor text. Your longtail keyword blog was also helpful.
Great tips. Thx. Yes, I've been adding the key words on the link - thankfully someone at my company mentioned it. But, now I truly understand why.
Oh, shoot, my picture isn't shoing up on any of my comments. I'm going to have to try to fix that. I wonder why that's happening.
Oh, shoot, my picture isn't shoing up on any of my comments. I'm going to have to try to fix that. I wonder why that's happening.
Katerina - I am spending the next two weeks going back into old posts, to add links. Thanks for the tips! And, I like the idea of always putting a good keyword on any picture, no matter what it is - more keywords pointing to you....
Dagny- Oh my, I just how old this post is! But yes, go back and add keywords and links to your old posts. This is the fastest way to get a boost because those posts have already aged and are most likely indexed.
